MATCH REPORT
Our visitors Cleeve, in this re-arranged KO cup game, won the U13’s
version of this Cup last season and their squad contained a fair proportion
of that winning team. It was not surprising, therefore, that we came
second by a margin of 31 runs, the only consolation being that, so far,
we are gradually reducing our margins of defeat.
Cleeve
batted first and were pegged back by an early wicket taken by Adam Crooks
(1-12). Our bowling attack again applied themselves well after this
initial success and had restricted the visitors to 38 runs by the 9th
over. Again the very accurate Russ Moore (1-13) made the next break
through in the 10th over and this was accompanied by an even better
spell from Simon Hill (3-10) at the other end. Cleeve were reeling a
bit on 54-5 at the end of the 13th over but they recovered some composure
and the 6th wicket pair of Dent & Rocliffe (both 15 n.o.)kept their
wickets intact in the remaining overs as we used 10 bowlers in all to
try and prise out another few wickets! Cleeve eventually finished 91-5,
but we were well pleased with our bowling and fielding performance.
Could
we ‘lay the ghost’ of previous batting frailties? The simple
answer was no and as in our other games we found it a real struggle
to accumulate runs and protect our wickets. The Cleeve strength has
always been in their bowling and tonight was no exception as they pinned
us down from the 2 opening maiden overs until, by the 10th over, we
only had 18 runs on the board and 2 batsmen back in the pavilion. Ali
Palmer (14) and newcomer Sam Honeywill (6) stayed together until the
12th over but we then lost 3 quick wickets to Power (3-12) leaving us
shell shocked on 25-5. We never recovered from this position, losing
another 2 wickets but a belated rearguard action from Haydn Lyons (12
n.o.) and Adam Burroughs (8 n.o.) brought a degree of respectability
to the scoreline, albeit that Cleeve assisted using a less volatile
attack. We reached a final total of 60-7 but despite a concerted effort
at the previous nights coaching session to improve batting technique
there is clearly a lot more work to be done if we are to achieve a winning
batting performance.
