MATCH REPORT
Not ideal conditions going into this game after a day of storms, which
eased up into the evening, Clevedon nevertheless decided to made the
journey in the hope that a game could be played without interruption
accepting it would be sticky underfoot.
Batting
first we managed to cope with the slippery conditions as openers Sam
Honeywill (8) and Lee Mansfield (42) had by the 11th over compiled our
highest first wicket partnership this summer of 59. Lee’s powerful
knock included two sixes and set us well on the way to what looked like
becoming a three figure final score. However, once these two had departed
in the space of the next 2 overs we lost our momentum and although Tom
Bond (6no) and Adam Burroughs (4no) added a flourish in the final overs
we fell well short on 85-7 as five wickets between S.Brown (3-11) and
R.Hogarth (2-4), aided by smart Clevedon outfield catching, thwarted
our attempts to get more runs.
Clevedon
found runs just as hard to come by as we contained their efforts to
get a decent run rate. By the 10th over they were behind the clock at
43-3. Another 2 wickets by 13th over put us in the driving seat, Clevedon
on 50-5 (Chapman 17)and needing 5 an over. The turning point came in
the 15th over as we conceded 10 runs to give them a critical boost.
Although we had produced a steady flow of wickets and had taken another
two by the 18th over, Jenny Withers (1-19); Lee Mansfield (2-20); Russ
Moore (2-23) and Tom Bond (1-21) plus a run out, it was not enough to
prevent Bates (14) and Hogarth (15no) holding their nerve and steering
Clevedon home with 3 balls to spare on 86-7.
