MATCH REPORT
After 2 weeks weather postponements it was a welcome change to get in
another game at near neighbours Congresbury who were helping us prop
up the rest of the league at the foot of the table!
Congresbury
asked us to bat first which looked to have been a good decision as inside
4 overs we were 10-2 losing Edward Anstee(1) and Archie Stead (2) very
cheaply. A partnership of 41 between Tom Bond (16) and Alex Milward
(21) steadied the ship though as we reached the 50 mark by the 10th
over. However, Tom B’s departure followed swiftly by that of Sam
Honeywill (0) brought us to 53-4 in the next over. But…Tom Williams
(28) was in no mood to let Congresbury gain the upper hand and produced
an aggressive innings at just the right time to maintain our momentum.
Tom was only out in the last over with the scoring having passed the
100 barrier, with the assistance of Jenny Withers (5no), as we finished
on a respectable total of 103-6.
Our
bowlers couldn’t wait to get out of the starting blocks and before
they knew what hit them Congresbury were reeling at 6-4 by the 6th over,
the damage being done by a very accurate opening spell from Russ Moore
(3-5)- who had a chance for a hat-trick, and Haydon Lyons (1-3) bowling
for the first time at this level. S.Rogers (11), S.Hornby (12) and M.Penfold
(29) did their utmost to retrieve the situation for Congresbury as they
advanced to 65-6 by the 15th over but were always fighting a losing
battle. Archie Stead (3-18) and Jenny Withers (2-10)- who also had a
hat trick opportunity, saw to that and ended any lasting hopes of a
tail end revival as Congresbury were bowled out for 81 on the penultimate
ball of their innings. A comfortable and deserved second League win.
