MATCH REPORT
Without a League game due to our early exit from the KO Cup the opportunity
was taken to play a Friendly fixture against our near neighbours East
Harptree. It was so friendly that we allowed them to bat and field with
a team of 14 players!, as they were a somewhat inexperienced side with
no actual league competition, although in their last game versus Winford
they reached a target of 140 runs to claim victory.
Winning
the toss we asked the visitors to bat first as this would give us a
chance to give all our players the chance to bowl a couple of overs
each, some of whom might not otherwise do so in league match. Virtually
all took advantage of their opportunities as by the 11th over the first
six bowlers had all taken wickets.. Jenny Withers (1-16) started the
rot followed by Edward Anstee (2-4), Josh Chastney (1-3), Adam Burroughs
(2-4).
The
star performance, however, went to Russ Moore who in his first spell
took 3-2. With 2 of his 3 wickets coming in the last 2 balls of his
second over leaving him on a hat-trick and Harptree in all sorts of
dis-array at 22 for 9. Russ returned to have a 3rd over and an attempt
at his hat-trick in the 16th when Harptree were 38-11, whilst in between
Sam Honeywill (2-1) had mopped up a few more wickets and Simon Hill
(12) .. playing for the opposition … had boosted their score with
the only double figure innings. Russ did not disappoint and duly took
his hat-trick courtesy of yet another close-in catch by Captain Adams
Crooks who took 5 in the match. Russ also took the final wicket in the
same over to end Harptree innings at 38-13 and finished with remarkable
figures of 2.4 overs, 5 wickets for 2 runs.
The weather meanwhile had taken a turn for the worse in the last few
Harptree overs and the prospect was that we could be calling it off
before we had a chance to finish the game. The order was, therefore,
a quick turn around with no between innings break and to ‘go for
it’. That was literally done by openers Ali Palmer (13) and Lee
Mansfield (19no) who had 30 runs on the board in the first 2 overs.
The weather eased and so did the batsmen as we adjusted to the slippery
wicket and it took another 4 overs with the loss of 2 wickets to reach
the 39 run target but a first and comprehensive win of the season albeit
against inexperienced non-league opposition.
A return match will probably be arranged on one of our vacant dates.
