MATCH REPORT
Visitors Nailsea were last seasons runners-up in this league so another
tough game was in prospect.
Batting
first they got off to a brisk start and had 29 on the board at the end
of the 5th over. At this point we came more into the game as Tom Bond
(2-21) clean bowled one of the openers and the next incoming batsmen
in consecutive balls and narrowly missed his hat-trick! This acted as
a spur to our bowling attack as we applied more pressure. Russ Moore
made the next break through (1-19) from a very accurate spell and Adam
Crooks (2-12) contributed to the gathering momentum as Nailsea were
pegged back to 55-5 at the end of the 10th over. Adam Burroughs chipped
in with (1-11) courtesy of a stupendous catch by Jenny Withers off a
towering shot in swirling wind and the ball coming down with ice on
it! Good fielding by Edward Anstee led to a run out as we restricted
Nailsea to 78-7 by the 17th over. They had a bit of a flourish in the
last 3 overs without further loss and finished on 94-7, Jenny Withers
(0-25) unlucky not to get a wicket, completing the final over.
Given
Nailsea’s pedigree and that we only had 10 fielders, keeping them
below a 100 run total rates as a very accomplished fielding and bowling
performance.
We
initially fared a lot better than last week in the quest for runs, thanks
to an impressively aggressive knock by Tom Bond (25) who with Ali Palmer
(7) carved out an opening partnership of 38 in only 7 overs and an upset
was looking possible!. But…. for the second time in a week Tom
was run out.. just as he was getting going. This unfortunately signalled
the start of another dramatic collapse as, apart from Rich Veater (7)
and Jenny Withers (6) we offered no resistance to Nailsea’s second-string
bowlers. The only other batsmen to score were Matt Smith (1) as all
others were consigned back to the pavilion for 0. Faulkner produced
a deadly spell of 4-9 off only 3 overs. Bell (2-1) and Morris (2-0)
picked up the rest of the wickets as we capitulated to 60 all out in
the 20th over. This was a very disappointing finish to what promised
to be a much closer game. Overall it was an improvement on last week
but our batting is a source of concern and we must endeavour to improve
technique and not give our wickets away, something to be worked on during
coaching!
