MATCH REPORT
Entertaining Portishead at Home could not have been in more contrast
in terms of the weather conditions to those experienced at Wrington
the previous week. On a pleasant warm summers evening we had just the
chance to break our string of defeats.
Asking
Portishead to bat first, given our previously good bowling and fielding,
seemed a good idea but uncharacteristically we let ourselves down with
a sloppy performance, mostly with our fielding. Our bowlers never really
got any control on the game to start with although Russ Moore (0-20
off 5 overs), Sam Honeywill (0-14 off 3 overs) and Lee Mansfield (1-18
off 4 overs), making his club debut, were the most accurate. Ali Palmer
(1-6 off 1 over) saw off Van Laun (25) in the closing overs but Chorlton
(27no)remained undefeated and by then their partnership of 54 runs had
proved crucial. Conceding 34 extras boosted Portishead’s total
well above the ton to 126-4 in their 20 overs.
Given
our previous scores, of which 60 has been the highest so far, this total
was a daunting prospect but with a revamped batting order and determination
to improve we set about the challenge. Four of the six top order batsmen
all reached middle to high double figures in the tens, with Captain
Adam Crooks (18, including a 6) leading the way. Ali Palmer (18) did
equally well and staunch support came from Lee Mansfield (16) and Richard
Veater (14). Despite this we never quite managed to keep up with the
required run rate so although, for the first time this season, we topped
the ton we fell short of the target by 24 runs finishing on 102-7 in
our 20 overs. This was a much improved batting display which hopefully
will be continued in future games.
