MATCH REPORT
A trip to Wrington with a strengthened squad as a result of some of
our ‘boarders’ being home for the Bank Holiday week gave
us optimism that we might be able to notch up our first victory of the
season.
However,
the abysmal weather conditions, which merited use of ‘flood lighting’
at 6 o’clock at night! were responsible for an exceptional game.
Exceptionally bad light, exceptionally soft wicket and exceptionally
low scores and we were on the receiving end of all of these factors.
Batting
first and despite having more strength in this area than previous games
‘we never saw them coming’ would be an appropriate phrase.
Bowling with impressive accuracy and fire by the 9th over we were in
serious trouble at 14–6, the cream of our batting already having
evaporated in the night time gloom, with the exception of Rhys Davies
(27) who produced a characteristically solid performance and was the
only batsman to reach double figures. The damage was done by M.Edmunds
(3-8), J Marston (3-6) and T.Green (3-17) as 6 of our batsmen were out
for ducks.. Jenny Withers survived a hat-trick ball from Edmunds but
succumbed to Green at the other end. So our lowest ever league total
of 37 was reached!
Not much hope of defending a total of that order you might think but
as an indication of how difficult conditions were by Wrington’s
9th over we had them 17-4 with Jenny Withers producing an equally impressive
opening spell of (3-6). Ben Lyons (0-8) at the other end will wonder
how he failed to get a wicket. Archie Stead (1-8) and Simon Hill (0-8)
kept up the pressure but never had the required break through although
in desperation for runs 2 further wickets had fallen by the fourteenth
over (33-6) as a result of run outs, one a splendid field and direct
hit by Richard Veater. With the light conditions having actually improved
instead of worsening Wrington’s 7th wicket pair held their nerve
and got the 5 runs required in the next three overs (38-6), J.McKay
(12no) being their only batsman in double figures, to win by 4 wickets.
