MONDAY, 16 AUGUST vs WESTON-SUPER-MARE WIZARDS at BLAGDON
Blagdon 249-5, Weston-Super-Mare Wizards 275-5 - Lost by 26 runs
Our final league game of the season was dramatic. A re-arranged
game because of the weather was severely threatened by thunder and
lightning; but we persevered.
Captain Archie Wall lost the toss and Weston elected to bat first.
The only decision really. They batted steadily and we bowled well
and after 10 overs the score was only 220 and they had lost 3 wickets.
We were happy except that Ed Plaister had other ideas and smacked
the next over for 19 runs, giving him an unbeaten 29. This proved
the key moment and, although we bagged a couple more wickets, we
never recovered from that hammering. Weston completed their 20 overs
on 275 for 5. Both sides went in to the tea interval thinking they
had something to play for.
We started at the right pace and were doing well with openers Tom
Blanchard and Martyn Mail. However, the Weston bowlers were very
strong all the way through the innings and they restricted us very
well and took their 5 wickets just as we were getting on top. With
6 overs left we were still in with a really good chance but two
quick wickets by Fearnley and McCrea pegged us back again. Still,
we had Will Yard and Ed Williams as the final pair and they were
more determined than ever to keep our winning streak. The best batting
of the season was equally matched by fantastic bowling and the crowd
were all on their feet, despite the rain pelting down. We were not
going down without a fight. Unfortunately the deficit was too great
and we finished on 249 for 5.
It was a super match and Weston were worthy winners.
