MATCH
REPORT
If there was ever such a thing as a Jekhyl & Hyde performance
in a cricket match this was it. In all my years associated with
our Youth Teams, this is the best example yet of how to contrive
an effortless defeat out of victory.
You would
have thought by bowling ourselves into a match winning position,
where we had Congresbury on the ropes and virtually buried at 22-9
by the end of the 9th over.. thanks to a deadly spell from Simon
Hill (4-5 off 3.1 overs..just missing a hat-trick) backed up by
Russ Moore (2-6) and James Ratcliffe (2-13) in his first game, that
it was all over bar the shouting. However from that point on the
course of the game was changed by the late arrival of Congresbury’s
captain J.Dewar (21no). We allowed his 10th wicket partnership with
T.Weymss (13) to add another 33 runs in the next 4 overs (17 runs
alone coming in the 12thover) before Simon Hill returned to take
the final wicket with the total on 55 runs.
Not an insurmountable
task you would imagine, just under 3 runs an over, but you needed
unbelievably vivid imagination to predict our response. Whilst accepting
their opening bowling attack of J.Dewar (0-7) and D.Williams (2-2)
was pretty hostile we only had to see them off in the first 10 overs,
picking up the odd single her and there. Whilst achieving our first
aim, not to lose an early wicket, it was our total inability to
take enough singles, just above 1 an over by the 8th when only 10
runs were on the board. Even so with 12 overs left the run rate
was still less than 4 an over. But it was actually the introduction
of their 2nd string bowlers who caused the damage with D.Bush (4-16),
removing both openers in the same over, and K.Drage ((2-11) decimating
our remaining early and middle order batting. From 15-2 in the 12th
over we collapsed to 28-7 by the 15th. But we had no saviour, as
Congresbury had in J.Dewar, and despite a valiant effort by our
tailenders to get within striking distance of the total they could
only mange another 9 runs and a final total of 37.
So an ignominious
defeat by 18 runs and a lot of soul searching as to how we possibly
managed such a fete? The answer simply is that when six of your
batsmen get ducks (2 run outs in the quest for late runs), extras
are the highest score, ahead of our only batsmen (Ali Palmer - 13)
to hit double figures, then you don’t deserve to win a game,
however well you may have bowled. This defeat equalled our previous
lowest score, versus Wrington last season, but was then entirely
due to the playing conditions which had no bearing in this game.
Due note has been made of our batting failings, as has already been
voiced, so coaching will from hereon in concentrate on this aspect
of our play which will, hopefully in time, produce some improvement
in this department!
