MATCH
REPORT
Our visit to Nailsea, last seasons U15’s Champions, could
not have been a tougher game to start the season off with. Although
the weather relented just enough to allow our first youth league
game of the season to be played, there was no relenting by Nailsea
as we suffered a comprehensive defeat by 91 runs.
Batting first
they accumulated a massive 157-6 in their 20 overs. They had 36
on the board by the end of the 5th over for the loss of only 1 wicket
and although we took further wickets in the 7th & 10th overs
(68-3)our bowlers had no real answer to their batting superiority,
of whom Walker (90 - run out trying to get the strike to complete
a century) was outstanding and in a class of his own.. Not being
able to contain him Nailsea’s pace accelerated dramatically
in the last 10 overs to nearly 10 runs an over as we lost control
of the game. Russ Moore's 2-21 off of 4 overs produced our best
bowling figures, the other wicket takers being Nick Bartlett (1-26),
Haydon Lyons (1-22) and Jacob Hartrey (1-30). Our fielding/bowling
had not been bad it had just been the explosive batting performance
by Walker that did the damage.
Our response got
off to a bad start with the loss of 2 wickets in the second over
and we never recovered from this and any hopes of matching the 8
runs an over asking rate, a daunting enough target anyway! virtually
disappeared. In fact we had to dig in to protect our wickets against
some very accurate bowling, particularly from Dowling 3-8 off of
4 overs, and by the 10th over had struggled to 33-5. Although we
doubled our score in the next 10 ten overs, thanks mainly to a resilient
knock by Josh Chastney (19) no one else reached double figures.
So despite batting out our full 20 overs and not being bowled out
we fell well short of the asking rate with a final total of 66-9.
As I commented in the equivalent match report against Nailsea last
season our batting remains a source of concern and we must again
endeavour to improve technique, something to be worked on during
coaching, when we can manage to get a session in!
The only consolation
of this opening game of the season, when compared to the opening
one against Optimists & Clifton last year, was that then they
scored 155-2 (our previous heaviest conceded total) and we lost
by 100 runs. Although Nailsea surpassed that total we at least reduced
the deficit to under 3 figures!
