MATCH
REPORT
Another sweltering summers evening, following the hottest day of
the year so far, greeted our visitors Uphill Castle but we were
unable to improve on our dismal League form, despite achieving the
highest score to date (bolstered again by a high proportion of extras),
and suffered a 7 wicket defeat.
Batting
first our early batsmen scored steadily but also lost wickets at
regular intervals nevertheless we were still handily placed by the
10th over on 46-4. James McHeag(10) and Adam Burroughs(12) boosted
the run rate in what was looking a promising middle order partnership
until their dismissals by the grandson of our groundsman! - Andy
Filer (3-20). As the scoring rate faltered in the closing overs,
J.McKay’s spell of 1-8 off of 5 overs was mainly responsible
for this, quick runs were sought but resulted in 2 run outs in the
process and although we batted the full 20 overs we were restricted
to a modest 83-9.
There was
no quick breakthrough which we needed against Uphill's opening partnership,
instead they quickly raced to 32 by the 5th over. T.Rolls (21) was,
however, dismissed in the next over (S.Hill 1-22) but that was our
only success until the 11th over (A.Ray 1-18) as Uphill reached
56-2, although we had managed to stem their run rate slightly. Scoring
the further 28 runs in 9 overs for victory was never going to be
a problem though, assisted by some sloppy fielding on our part,
and J.McKay's (38n.o.)- Uphill’s man of the match - saw to
it that this target was reached by the first ball of the 16th over
for the loss of just one more wicket (A.Burroughs 1-16) and a score
of 86-3.
