Although this season we had an influx of players, which
made up for the continuing loss of those who were at boarding
school for most of the season, we again had an unenviable
start of 5 league defeats (interspersed with a 2nd round
cup win against Claverham, but lost to Cleeve in the Semi-Final!).
It was not until the 5 July that we recorded our first league
win – again against Claverham – to start a spell
of 2 wins and a Tie from our remaining 3 matches.
The fact remains that although we have a very capable bowling
line-up our batting lacks depth and we are not able to give
ourselves the sort of targets to bowl at that win matches.
It was not until the later games of the season that players
were available to provide the batting backbone we needed
to secure wins.
You will see from the table below that we finished 7th ,
the same position as in 2003 but actually won a game more,
but this was only by default as Weston pulled out of their
game and no re-arrangement was organised! Weston still have
another result to post so could finish joint 7th with us.
Match summaries are at the end of this report.
Despite the string of early season defeats this did not
deter the teams attitude, and it was again encouraging to
see that they never dropped their heads when losing, showed
good commitment/attitude and always came to the next game
with their moral still high and a determination to do better.
As usual my thanks go to Graham Withers for his help with
the running of the team/scoring, (particularly during my
3 week sabbatical to get rid of my daughter!) and also to
Axel Palmer and Robin Honeywill for standing in on numerous
occasions with the scoring too. Until he was injured in
the latter stages of the season James Butcher covered the
absence of our coach and continued his work to improve the
players batting and bowling techniques. As ever Jan Lyons,
providing her invaluable administrative assistance. My gratitude
too to all the other parents whom we rely and who helped
with the refreshment duties, transportation etc We must
not, of course, forget our Youth Sponsors recorded above
and our groundsman Fid, without whom we could not play the
games.
Finally yet again our thanks and plaudits go to Matt Colwill
as webmaster for our cricketing website, having been re-designed
by him during the winter for something to do!, which remains
unsurpassed by any other local clubs for it’s statistical
content and reporting to the extent it is now even used
by the North Somerset Youth Cricket League for publication
of their tables. This is a minefield of information of the
latest club results, news, announcements etc. which everyone
should regularly take the opportunity to visit.
