Having to re-arrange this fixture to play away, due a clash with a
Senior XI Bank Holiday game at Home, and only being able to field
10 players (including 2 U13’s) was not an ideal start to the
season having already suffered a weather postponed KO cup game. Whereas
the U17’s also only had 10 players for their first game KO cup
game we unfortunately failed to emulate theirs, the U11’s or
U13’s winning performances, losing by 17 runs.
Bristol (Optimists) batted first and although there was an early
run out success as a result of some smart fielding by Tom Coles
(debut) it was not until the 12th over before the dangerous W. Tavare
(28) fell victim (47-2) to a sharp catch by Chris Goldsbrough off
of Haydon Lyons (1-18) bowling. At this stage we could be well satisfied
with the way we had contained them. Initially it was thanks to the
opening spells from Simon Hill and Chris Clough-Hall (debut) but
it was mostly due to the ever accurate Jenny Withers, whose 1-9
off of 5 overs was the pick of our bowling performances, that Optimists
had only reached 57-3 by the 15th over with only a modest total
was in prospect. However S.Skidmore (49no) had others ideas and
picked up the pace to 5 an over in the next 4 overs, despite us
securing another run out (77-4), and in the final over threw caution
to wind against a luckless Chris Goldsbrough who was hit for 20
including a last ball 6 to give Optimists a final more than respectable
score of 97-4.
Our openers Simon Hill (8) and Jacob Hartrey (0) were pinned down
to a run rate of 4 in the first 3 overs as they tried to see off
the initial bowling attack but the break through came in the 4th
over as first Jacob, then Chris Clough-Hall (0) were dismissed within
3 balls by the fiery W.Tavare. The further loss of Simon in the
7th over followed by James Roscoe (5) both to M.Collins (2-13) left
us struggling on 22-4 by the 9th over. However, Cameron Hastie’s
arrival at the crease gave some hope of a recovery as, riding his
luck (dropped 3 times) he proceeded, with the help of Chris Goldsbrough
(7), to stem the fall of wickets and push the score back up, by
the time Chris was out in the 16th over, to a healthier 48-5. Joining
him at that stage, with an almost impossible task required of 50
runs in 4 overs, was captain Haydon Lyons. With both hitting some
sweetly timed boundaries the run rate suddenly reached almost 10
an over and we were left needing 22 runs to win in the final over!
Could we achieve what Optimists had done ? Unfortunately not, as
the return of W Tavare, Optimists man of the match, in a second
spell (4-4 off of 3 overs) saw both Haydon (9) then Cameron (25),
our man of the match, cleaned bowled in the space of 3 balls, leaving
Jenny Withers (3no) and on his debut Clayton Davies (1no) to give
us a final score of 80-7.
Overall this was a very creditable performance and a gutsy fight
back!
