MATCH REPORT

Historically, as against Cleeve (until last week), we rarely perform well against Cheddar and last season comprehensively lost by 10 wickets. On the back of our win against Cleeve confidence was high that we could continue with the winning trend.

Cheddar batted first and were soon into their stride with an opening partnership of 27 which was broken by Haydon Lyons (1-18) in the 6th over. A change to our second string bowlers was rewarded by 2 further wickets in the 7th & 11th overs as Jenny Withers (2-20) accounted for H.Stobart (1) and opener B.Stacey (23). At 47-3 we appeared to be in control of the game but L.Wilkinson (37) and A.Crummey (17) proceeded to take us to task with a 54 run partnership for the 4th wicket until, in his second spell, Simon Hill (2-33) removed the former and the incoming batsman in consecutive balls in the 19th over with the score on 101-5. Not satisfied with this score Cheddar strived to get the maximum they could from the final over and added a further 4 runs but at the expense of 2 run outs to bring their final total to 105-7.

Having become one of our recognised openers Chris Clough-Hall(13) together with Simon Hill (4) ensured that we made good progress in the early stages and 23 runs were on the board at the rate of nearly 6 an over by the time Simon was out in the 4th.
Chris again only lasted a couple more overs and departed with the score on 29-2 and is yet to show his full potential to go on and get a big score. He was the first of four victims to the bowling of L.Matthews (4-21), who was threatening to thwart our progress. George Powell (12) in his first batting attempt since returning from a broken wrist injury joined Cameron Hastie (4) and coped admirably. Cameron has yet to find his form and was out in the low single figures at 37-3. in the 10th over. A couple of double figure partnerships between George and Chris Goldsbrough (7) then Chris and James Roscow (15), before the former two were dismissed, saw us reach 65-5 by the 14th over. An unfortunate run out saw Jacob Hartrey (5) quickly return to the pavilion on 70-6 in the next over and with 35 runs still needed from the remaining 6 overs things were beginning to look decidedly tight. However, this brought Haydon Lyons (17no) in to join James and the situation was retrieved by a blistering partnership of 27 runs in the space of just 3 overs which turned the game. It was a set-back when James was out in the 18th over with score on 97-7 but James McKeag (8no) wasted no time in hitting the winning runs in the 19th to give us a deserved 3 wicket win with more than an over to spare.
