---------------------------------------------------
Cleeve batted first and come the
4th and 5th overs we had our first successes as Haydon Lyons (2-10) and then
Simon Hill (1-14) each took a wicket respectively to give us an encouraging
start. With continuing tight bowling from Jenny Withers (0-12 off of her 4
overs) we kept a stranglehold on the run rate and in he 10th over Jacob Hartrey
(1-28) broke through again to leave Cleeve on 32-3 at the end of it. However,
from there on we had to endure a considerable onslaught from C.James (45no)
and W.Carpenter (24) as they amassed a 4th wicket partnership of 62 runs at
nearly 8 an over., until the latter was dismissed on the first ball of their
last over with the score on 92-4. This still left enough time for James to
add another 6 runs and give Cleeve a final score of 98-4.
A challenging total but were we capable of meeting it ?
An opening stand of 22 inside 4 overs between Chris Clough-Hall (14) and Simon Hill (6) before the latter was bowled was better than most recent starts against Cleeve and was extended to 39 before the second wicket fell - Steve Huggins (5) in the 6th over. Chris only lasted until the next over and ominously we then lost a further 3 wickets to low scores in the space of the next 5 overs, James Mckeag (6); Cameron Hastie (3); James Roscow (3) and suddenly found ourselves on 53-6 as L.Pearce (2-13) and W.Carpenter (2-15) caused a middle order collapse. However, Chris Goldsbrough (24no), finding his form, and Haydon Lyons (19no) with a pivotal Captains innings again, did not lose their nerve and were able to see off the second string bowlers in an undefeated 7th wicket partnership of 46 to secure a welcome victory by 4 wickets with nearly 2 overs to spare.
