MATCH REPORT

The spoils in yet another very competitive and exciting game finally went to us after events first see-sawed one way then the other.

From a healthy position at 9 overs of 49-3 up to which point Doug Gray (2-18) and Jenny Withers (1-27) had taken the wickets to fall, Clevedon collapsed to an inspired spell of spin bowling from James McKeag, who finished with 5-17 off of 5 overs. A wicket in each of his two opening overs was a good start but the real damage was done in the 12th over when in consecutive deliveries he took 3 wickets (the last unfortunately interspersed by a 4th for which he was no-balled and so unfortunately it does not constitute a hat-trick!). Suddenly Clevedon's score had become 67-8 but they did not capitulate completely and added another 15 runs in the next 4 overs before Haydon Lyons (2-9) wrapped up their last 2 wickets and innings at 82.

Our response was not ideal as we lost a wicket to the first ball of the innings and struggled to make much headway against the lively Clevedon attack. Most of the top order were dismissed cheaply, Cameron Hastie and Jack Lyons for ducks and James McKeag (1). By the 10th over we were just about up with the run rate on 37-4, but only thanks to a hard hitting 19 from Jacob Hartrey. However, when we was out in the next over, followed quickly by the loss of a further 3 wickets, George Powell (8), Chris Golsdbrough and Tom Hendzel for two more ducks, come the 14th over it left us on 50-7 and needing 33 runs off of 6 overs. Enter Doug Gray (18no) to join skipper Haydon Lyons (26no) who between them, in the gathering gloom and increasing tension, compiled an undefeated stand of 35 runs to wrench the game away from Clevedon with 4 balls to spare and 3 wickets in hand.
