We needed to get back to winning habits for this game in order to finish in a reasonable position in the table although it was with very much a scratch side and no less than six U13’s players having to be drafted in given the absence of many of our regulars but Congresbury were in almost a similar position so things were pretty evenly match.
We batted first and got away to an encouraging start with an opening stand of 34 when we lost the wicket of Jacob Hartrey (21) to the last ball of the 7th over. A further stand of 20 between Alex Ray (23) and Lloyd Davies (19) took us on to 54-2 before Lloyd was dismissed. Captain for the match James Mckeag (0) unfortunately was run out by a direct throw without scoring and Angus Yard (1) departed cheaply too as we suffered from a mid-order glitch at 69-4 by the end of the 14th over. Doug Gray (20no) however, restored things more into our favour with a 28 run partnership for the 5th wicket with Alex before the latter was out in the 18th over on 92-5. Tight bowling in the last 3 overs curtailed hopes of any last minute spurt in our runs total and we had to settle for just reaching the 100 mark.
Feeling in a very benevolent mood James McKeag decided to use 9 bowlers, a move which could have backfired, but all were very economical and bar Angus Yard (0-8) and Jacob Hartrey (0-16) each took a least a wicket whilst mostly keeping a tight rein on Congresbury’s progress. Alex Ray (2-12) had the first breakthroughs in the 1st and 5th overs and along with Doug Gray (2-12) accounted for the first 4 batsmen to be removed by the 12th over on a score of 42. A further 3 wickets in the next 2 overs from Tom Coles (1-5), James McKeag (1-6) and Ross McAuliffe (1-11) knocked the stuffing out of Congresbury and reduced them to 53-7. They did not give up however as 21 runs came from an 8th wicket stand between R.Brooke (12) and A.Whitiker (13no) in the next 3 overs which was broken by James Binding (1-4) but this had put them in reach at 74-8 of a possible upset. This looked even more so as another 10 runs came from the 19th over leaving 17 runs required off of the last. But we held our nerve as Lloyd Davies (1-9) took another wicket and restricted the runs to just 5 to give us an 11 run win as Congresbury finished on 89-9.
