MATCH REPORT

Perhaps the exertions of Monday nights victory at Clevedon contributed to this under par performance in this last (re-arranged) league game of the season.

A very sloppy start saw us reduced to 12-3, James McKeag (1) and Jacob Hartrey and Jack Lyons for ducks, by only the 5th over from which it was always going to be difficult to pick up any momentum. No batsmen was really able to make headway against some tight Uphill bowling. The only double figure scores and real defiance came from opener Archie Wall (22), playing an anchor role, who with Haydon Lyons (15) attempted to stage a fight back for the 4th wicket with a partnership of 33 runs from 9 overs until Haydon was out to A.Filer (1-15) in the 15th over but even then we only had a very mediocre scoreline of 45-4. After George Powell (0) had failed to score, giving T.Oltram (1-17) his only wicket, firstly Doug Gray (9) and then Chris Goldsbrough (9) in partnership with Archie managed to push the score towards the seventies, Having wreaked the earlier damage in their first spells, J.Ratcliffe (3-18) from his 5 overs and A.Luke (4-7) from his impressive 4 overs both ensured that no substantial recovery was made as they returned in the final overs With both Doug & Archie’s dismissals at the hands of Ratcliffe in the 17th and 19th overs we were left on 73-7 going into the last over from Luke. He accounted for Chris with his second ball and Jenny Withers (0) with his last conceding just a single so resulting in a disappointing final total for us of 74-9.

Despite a first ball wicket from Haydon Lyons (1-24) and the use of 7 bowlers to try and prise out Uphill’s batsmen we could not prevent them from racing away at 5 an over, apart from a blip in the 3rd over when James McKeag took our second wicket at 16-2, which by the 11th over had become 63-2. This was mainly due to A.Luke (33) who, unfortunately dropped by us early on when he was not into double figures (upon such things matches turn and that was probably true in this case !), together with T.Brener (26no) were responsible for a 3rd wicket stand of 47 runs. Despite James McKeag (3-17) threatening a last minute breakthrough.as he took 2 more wickets at the same score of 63-4 in his final spell in the 12th over, including that of Luke’s, Brener, remained firm. In the next 4 overs he steered Uphill through to another 11 runs, levelling the scores, and although George Powell (1-2) chipped in with a wicket in the second ball of the 17th over, a wide from his next ball sealed a comfortable 5 wickets victory for Uphill and became an anti-climax to the season for us!.
