In an exciting and high scoring game the U15's narrowly lost this pulsating encounter against Weston which was played in a highly competitive but sporting manner and was a credit to both teams, who at the time were in leading positions in the table.
Batting first Weston overcame the early setback of losing a wicket to Simon Hill (1-28) in the opening over, and thanks to two 50+ partnerships, firstly between J. Gadd (24) and then J.Howson (20) with the undefeated M. Smit (64no) they posted the highest total we have yet faced of 122-3. Haydon Lyons (1-19) and Jenny Withers (1-29) were our only other wicket takers; Chris Clough-Hall (0-30) and James McKeag (0-9) were unable to make any impression.
Simon Hill (33), in his most impressive batting display so far, figured in an opening stand of 52 with Cameron Hastie (11) by the 10th over which put us 1 run ahead of Weston at the same stage. This was just a tad below the run rate required overall but a great start nevertheless against some quality opening bowling. We lost some momentum in the next 5 overs as the Gadd brothers took a couple of wickets and we also added to our problems with a run-out but this was partly compensated for by extras from some wayward Weston bowling at that point. At the end of the 18th over, despite 10 runs coming from it thanks to a lusty 6 by James McKeag (8), we still required 20 runs to win and had only managed to score 6 of them in the 19th over leaving 14 runs required in a nail biting last over. With Haydon Lyons (23) still at the crease this was a distinct possibility and a degree of panic ensued with the Weston fielding as he took them on with high risk running (resulting in a scampered 5 runs off the second ball due to overthrows trying to hit his wicket). At 115-5 and 8 runs needed from 4 balls this however proved a 'wicket too far' as he tried to regain the strike end and was run-out. With 8 runs still needed from 3 balls it was left to Chris Goldsbrough (0) and George Powell (2no) to claim the glory! but J.Howson produced a snorter to uproot Chris's wickets first ball and George could only manage a 2 from his first ball and was unable to make contact for the 6 required for victory off of his last, which sailed through to the wicket keeper, much to Weston's relief to give them a 5 run victory margin.
