This was the third attempted re-arrangement of this cup tie due to
continuing bad weather, wet conditions being a trait in virtually
all our games against Wrington in recent years producing low scoring
matches. Although the ground conditions had improved these were still
not ideal under foot but at least it was dry above!
Good bowling and tight fielding are essential factors in Cup games
and we produced just that by restricting Wrington to a run rate
of under 4 an over, whilst steadily picking up wickets shared equally
amongst our four main bowlers. The first of these came in the 6th
over with the score on 18-1 from Haydon Lyons (1-19). In the 13th
over Jenny Withers (1-22) was responsible for the fall of their
2nd wicket at 45-2. Jacob Hartrey (1-10) contrived the next dismissal
an over later quickly followed in the 15th over by a further success
as their danger man O.Winhurst (36) was run out by some smart in
fielding to bring the score to 54-4. Doug Gray (0-8) and Tom Coles
(0-9), two of our five contingent from our U13’s squad drafted
in for this game, both meanwhile bowled 2 tidy overs each to keep
the pressure on Wrington. Simon Hill (1-13) returned to bowl his
last over in the 19th and deservedly got a wicket at 69-5 but there
was a consolation for Wrington as they threw caution to the wind
in the last over and netted a further 10 runs off of Haydon to bring
their total to a respectable 79-5.
In reply we made a confident start with Steve Huggins (13) bettering
his previous weeks opening score as we scored 19 before Simon Hill
(3) was out in the 5th over. In a flurry of wickets and runs in
the next 4 overs the scoreline became 41-4 as first Steve was dismissed,
Cameron Hastie departed for a duck followed by Jacob Hartrey after
he bludgeoned a rapid 13 runs. A degree of stability was required
and this came in the form of Doug Gray (14) who in the next seven
overs, with Haydon Lyons (21no) at the other end, playing a Captains
innings, put on a partnership of 33 runs before being dismissed
in the 16th over with the score on 75-5. Haydon required just 3
balls from the next over to hit the 5 runs required to give us victory
by 5 wickets.
