The day started well, it was sunny, there was little a breeze and
we were ready to tackle WSM. We won the toss (the only thing we won
all day), and put them in to bat.
Some good early bowling from Garth Tiley (1-19) and Simon Hill (2-32)
pegged them down a bit, but when their third and forth batsmen came
in we really started to struggle. With some lovely stroke play from
J Matthewson (64 n/o) and D James (46) a big score was looking inevitable.
Unfortunately with the fielders placed in close to try and keep the
score down, the quality of these 2 batsmen meant they were able to
pick their shots between the fielders and score countless boundaries.
Some good wicket-keeping from Alex Chapman (a new member to the team)
helped to keep the number of extras down.
When it came to our turn to bat, we had a massive total to achieve,
this didn’t deter our batsmen. They gave it their all, but unfortunately
by trying match their run rate we were leaving our wickets more exposed,
and as a result more were bowled trying to get some runs without too
much success. A valiant effort by Garth at least gave us a more acceptable
score (28) than we might otherwise have had. We unfortunately had
the benefit of their wicket-keeper being taken off injured very early
on with a blow to the head. Their replacement did an admiral job,
however he helped us by letting through 21 byes. Their bowling, like
their batting, was very good. Figures of (2-6 off 1 over) from A Nichols,
(4-24) R Bessex and (2-3 off 3) M Williams show that we were no match
for them.
Better luck this weekend as we have got them again in the semi-final
of the cup.
